Pregnancy and Webster Technique

WEBSTER TECHNIQUE

The Webster technique is a gentle chiropractic technique that aligns the pelvis and assists with soft tissue release of associated muscle groups. It allows the pelvis to function properly during pregnancy. The technique reduces soft tissue tension that may cause uterine torsion, allowing for an ideal environment for the baby to grow and move. Webster technique is helpful in providing relief for common lower back and sciatic pains that pregnant women often experience.

Dr. Robin, who is certified in Webster Technique, will start by gathering information about yourself and your pregnancy followed by a thorough and detailed examination. After the examination process, she will often start by reducing tension in the gluteus muscles and piriformis before starting the chiropractic adjustments of the sacrum and pelvis. Most pregnant women look forward to being able to rest on their bellies with the support of a pregnancy pillow that can continually be adjusted as mom grows to make room for the baby.

Dr. Robin will adjust the full spine as needed, sometimes using an activator tool to provide greater accuracy and reduce post adjustment soreness. Toward the end of treatment, the pregnant patient turns onto their back so the doctor can examine the pubic bone. In this position, the doctor is looking for a misalignment and they will ask their patient if there is an increased tenderness on one or both sides. The pelvis is a circle made up of three bones (two ilium and a sacrum) and three joints (two sacroiliac joints and the pubic symphysis) – Webster technique is effective because it addresses all joints of the pelvis. The final step of the treatment reduces any tension in round ligaments and hip flexors that might be providing discomfort or causing pelvic or uterine torsion.
